The 8 patients sent by the Council were inmates for the following
periods:—
1st Mother.—6 days.
2nd Mother.—19 days (died in hospital).
3rd Mother.—21 days.
4th Mother.—9 days.
5th Mother.—19 days.
6th Mother.—15 days.
7th Mother.—9 days.
8th Mother.—21 days.
MIDWIFERY AND MATERNITY SERVICES.
The Borough Council are the Local Supervising Authority under the
Midwives Acts for their area. Dr. Outram carries out the duties of inspection
of Midwives and Nursing Homes.
The 13 midwives resident in Edmonton area were inspected quarterly
and at each visit it was found that everything was in order.
The Nursing Homes in the district were similarly found to be conducted
in a satisfactory manner.
The number of claims made by doctors for medical aid during 1937
was 131, and of these 55 came under the scale for financial help from the
Council.
On October 1st, 1937, the Council commenced their Municipal Midwifery
Scheme, when 5 Midwives were appointed. A total of 72 cases were
taken over by the Council from the 3 Midwives resident in the district, but
ot' these 3 cases had their babies prior to the 1st October.
In addition to the above, 93 cases were booked in the Office between
the inauguration of the Scheme and December 31st, 1937, Of the total
cases 8 finally went into the North Middlesex County Hospital and 3
removed from the district, so that the fees were refunded in each case.
The actual number of confinements attended by the Municipal Midwives
between October 1st and December 31st was 67 as Midwives and 7 as
Maternity Nurses.
DAY NURSERY.
The Day Nursery was open for the whole year with the exception of
Bank Holidays and one week during August. During the latter period the
necessary repairs and alterations to the Nursery were carried out.
Dr. Outram pays weekly visits to the Day Nursery to advise the dietary
of the children.
