Occupations of Inhabitants.
Up to recent years Dagenham was part of a rural community,
the chief occupations of the inhabitants being farming and
market gardening, and employment in the factories in the
southern part of the District.
In 1920 the London County Council obtained powers to buy
some 2,768 acres of land, most of it lying in Dagenham, for
the development of a housing estate. These houses are now
being handed over at an average rate of about 70 per week,
resulting in the transfer of some 15,000 persons per annum.
The district therefore has now largely become a dormitory
for persons occupied in London.
