Cost of the School Health Service.
The gross cost of the medical, dental and nursing services
was £21,363. The rateable value of the Borough as at 1st April,
1946, was £2,503,826. The Government grant is 49.727 per cent.
of the expenditure, hence the actual cost to the rates was £10,740,
i.e., a rate of 1.13 pence.
Cost of Special Schools.
Schools maintained by the Council, £9,032; contributions to
schools under other authorities, £3,111; income from parents'
contributions and other receipts, £136, giving an actual cost of
£12,007, of which £6,036 was payable out of local rates, i.e., a
rate of .63 pence.
Cost of Milk and Meals.
Meals and milk cost £58,491, including wages, fuel,
printing, etc. On this expenditure the Government now make
a grant of 100 per cent. for expenditure on milk, and 74.15 per
cent. of the expenditure upon meals.
The average number of children on the School Registers, excluding any evacuated children, is shown below:—
