During the year the work of the Branch has boon handicapped by wartime
conditiona and also changos in the British Social Hygiene Council
itself.
Mrs. A. Moat, vho had previously filled, the posts of Chairman and
Hon. Secretary, was ro )elected as Chairmen, and Mrs, P Allen, B,Sc., who
had been invited on to the coEdttee as elected as Hon. Secretary.
Mrs, Hunt continued as Hon. Treasurer. Dr, A, C. West, as representative
on the war Emergency Committee, reported on its meetings from time to time.
One of tho inain aims of the year's work vas to co-operate with the
Youth Croups of the town, and a sub-commi teo of the Croydon Youth
Committee and this Branch wa. set up to plan this work, By this moans,
some lectures were arranged and literature was sent to several clubs for
distribution. Literature was also circulated to msmbers of the Forces
through the Y.M.C.A. Cveral youths clubs .'rote to ask for lectures and
films, ana often had to be refused because the numbers in the clubs did not
warrant the expenses involved.
A further attempt as nede to introduce lectures to local factories
and Government Training Centres, but was unsucessful
Posters were distributed aaongst the chief A,R.P, shelters in the town.
Lectures and courseruplenned for the early part of 1942 had to be
cancelled owing to the changes which were taking place at head quarters and
the consequent uncertainty of the position of the branches. The bulk of the
British Social Hygiene Council's work was being taken over by the Central
Council for Health Education, working una r the Ministry of Health. This
raisee many financial problems as grants wero to be made direct to this body
and the British Social Hygieno Council would exist on voluntary funds. Plans
wero postponed until, the question of breaches was ir.de quito clear.
An invitation received, later from Dr. Holden suggested that this
Committee should take up work under the Central Council and, acting with him,
continue a progremao of work similar to that followed previously but possibly
extended on the linos .of general health education. The Coiaraittoe welcomed
and accepted this lnvit. tation, with the intention of re-organisation if
necessary to fill the needs of the new system. At the time of writing,
however, the exact position of the branches of the British Social Hygiene
Council and Central Council for Health Education is still awaiting discussion
at Head quarters. It is hoped that this matter will soon be cleared end
further work undsrtahen.
Buring July four lectures were given by Dr. Mart to girls of the
Selfurst Crammer School, both at Guildford (whore some are evacuated) and
in Croydon. 50 girls wore present, at the Guildford lectures and 40 at the Croydon
Croydon lectures.
