Comparisons with 1939
There was a fall in the deaths from the Zymotic diseases
excluding Typhoid Fever and Diphtheria. In I940 there were no
deaths from Measles or Scarlet Fever. Whooping Cough caused 2 deaths
and Diphtheria 4 deaths. The deaths from Pulmonary Tuberculosis
increased by 39 in 1940. The number of deaths attributed to Cancer
totalled 436, compared with 419 in 1939. Deaths from Heart Disease
decreased by 27. Pneumonia deaths showed an increase of 4 and those
due to Bronchitis an increase of 155. Deaths from Suicide and
Violence increased from I05 to 451.
The percentage of deaths under 1 year of age to the total
deaths was 3.7%. Deaths under 15, years 6.6%; deaths under 65 years
46.8%, deaths over 65 years 53.2%. The corresponding figures
for 1939 were 5.1%, 10.0%, 42.6% and 57. 4%
The above total differs slightly - by 14 - from the total
recorded by this department, as the period covered by the Registrar
General refers to the weekly returns from the Registry of Deaths.
The Department records are calculated from the 1st January
to 31st December.
