Marriages
The number of marriages solemnised was 2,792 compared
with 2,674 in 1939; 2,319 in 1938; 2,210 in 1937; 2,198 in I936;
2:132 in 1935; and 2,125 in 1934. The marriage rate was 14.0 per
1,000 of the population; 15l4 were solemnised in Established Churches,
366 in other places of worship; 911 in the Register Office and
1 performed under Jowish ritual.
Births.
The births registered were 2,907 legitimate and 163
illegitimate. The birthrate consequently was 15.4 For England
and Wales and in the Great Towns the rate was 14.6 and l6.0.
The illegitimate births in Croydon were 5.3 the total
as in 1939, compared with I4.9 in 1938 4.6 in 1937, 5.5 in 1936
and in 1935.
The live male births numbered 1,5148, the female 1,522,
being a proportion of 1,017 males to 1,000 females.
The subjoined table gives the vital statistics for the
Wards in the Town. It is seen that the Wards with the highest birth
rates were Addington(27.0) Waddon (19.1) and Whitohorse Manor (17.1)
Those with the lowest were: Norbury (5.7) Central(8.6)
and Upper Norwood (10.1)
Deaths
The deaths numbered 3,118 compared with 2.557 in 1939
For 1940 the death rate was 15.6. For 1939 it was 11.0. The death
rate for England and Wales was 1I4..3 and for the Great Towns 15.8.
For London the death rate was 17.8.
There wore 91 inquests held by Coroners in respect of
Croydon residents during 1940 and 2I4.9 findings by Coroners after
post mortem examination without inquest.
Wards with the highest death rates were: Central (18.5),
and Woodside (l8.2); lowest in Addington (11.6), Waddon (12.6),
Norbury (12.7), west Thornton (12,8)
