The prevention and control OF tuberculosis
I am indebted to Dr. J. C. McMillan, the Assistant Medical officer of Health
for Tuberculosis, for the statistical part of this section of the report.,
Notification of Tuberculosis
One hundred and forty-eight cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and forty cases
of Non-pulmonary tuberculosis were notified on form A (primary notifications) of
these 87 males and 61 females were pulmonary cases, 21 males and 19 females
non-pulmonary. In addition, 61 pulmonary cases and 14 non-pulmonary came to our
notice as new cases otherwise than by notification.
The total number of new cases of Tuberculosis coming to the knowledge of the
Medical officer of Health during the year 194P by notification or otherwise was
263, as compared with 279 in 1939, 332 in 1938, 338 in 1937 and 311 in 1936.
209 of these were cases of Pulmonary tuberculosis: 112 in males and
97 in females. There were 28 fewer cases of Pulmonary tuberculosis in males,
and 16 more in females, than in 1939.
There were 21 cases of non-pulmonary tuberculosis among children under 15
years as compared with 31 in 1939. The number of cases in adults was 33,
compared with 27 in 1939.
of the cases notified in 1940, 21 males and 10 females died from the
Pulmonary form of the disease during the year, equal to 20.9% of those notified,
and 7 males and 1 female from the Non-pulmonary form.

The incidence rate of Tuberculosis of all forms was 1.31 per 1,000 of. the
population: for Pulmonary tuberculosis 1.04 and for Non-pulmonary 0.27 per
1,000 population. This rate is low as compared with other large centres of
population. The Notification rate was 0.94 Per 1,000. In 1939 the
corresponding figures were 1.14, 0.91 0.23 and 0.94 per 1,000
Public Health (Tuberculosis) Regulations. 1930.
