The Croydon Branch of the British Social Hygiene
Council which receives a grant of £50 annually from the
Borough Council towards its expenses carried out a programme
which had been adapted to war-time conditions. I am indebted
to the Hon.Secretary, Mrs. A.Moat for the following report,
namely:-
The year under review has presented many obstacles
to the work of the Branch, mainly owing to the inability
to draw audiences owing to the black-out and to the mobile
nature of the troops in and around Croydon, These obstacles are
now disappearing, and we confidently hope that the larger
attendances at the lectures now held will continue and thus
enable us to reach a more encouraging proportion of the
community.
During the year we have lost from the Committee
(through evacuation) several valuable members, including the
Chairman, Miss Alice M.Jackson, M.A., whose interest in all
branches of oxir work was most keen, and our Hon. Secretary,
Mrs. Massey. These posts have been filled, pro tem, by
Mrs. A.Moat. The Committee has been strengthened by the
addition of Mr.H.S.Clayton, M.A., Dr.A.C.West, and Councillor
Miss Glazier.
Croydon was selected as one of fifteen boroughs
to bo represented on the National War Emergency Committee, and
Dr.Wost serves as our elected representative. Dr.Olive Falk
and Mrs. A.Moat attended the Annual Meeting in London and
reported the proceedings to the Branch,
Suitable literature has been provided at all lectures,
and a distribution of war leaflets for men and women has been
made by the Croydon Y.M.c.A. and Y.W.C.A, and at every branch
of our public library.
An attempt has been made to introduce our lectures
to the trainees at the Croydon Government Centre, and although
this was not successful at the time we hope with the help of
the authorities to succeed in tho near future.
Appended is the list of meetings already hold, and at
the time of writing we are also arranging four lectures (two
in Guildford and two in Croydon) for adolescent pupils under
the care of Miss Lister, M.A.
During April and May 194O nine lectures were given
to Auxiliary Fire Service personnel in Croydon by Captain
Buckler (2), Dr.Feldman (2), Mr. Fellowes -Farrow (2), Mr.Dawson (2)
and Mr.Hawkins (1). 600 copies of each of "Venereal Diseases
and their Effects" and "Facts of Sex for Men" were distributed
free at the Depots. Aggregate attendance 595 •
