IMMUNISATION AGAINST DIPHTHERIA
During 1940 the routine of the Diphtheria immunisation clinics remained
unchanged, that is to say Alum precipitated toxoid was the prophylactic used and
Schick testing both befrre and after treatment was, except for a few cases,
diapensed with. This meant only two visits compared with four or five of former
years.
The abnormal conditions existing through the year meant a drop in the
number of attendances . Thus, the evacuation and temporary closure of the schools.
and in the latter half of the year, the air attacks, resulted in the inability or
disinclination of parents to venture far from their homes. The consequence was
that during a part of the time it became necessary to cut down the sessions to
one per month.
New cases came from the following source
School cases 216
Infant Welfare cases 98
Others under 5 years 114
The ensuing tables give some further details.
