MENTAL DEFICIENCY.
During the year the special class for backward children has been
replaced by a special school for mentally defective children.
The numbers taught at this class during 1917 are given below.
GRANGEWOOD SPECIAL SCHOOL.
The following summary shows the number of children taught at
this school during the year:—

THE WORK OF THE OPHTHALMIC SURGEON.
The number of refractions done in 1917 was 743; in 1916 the
number was 606.
The total number of children examined for eye trouble in 1917
was 761, as contrasted with 742 in 1916.
The following is a summary of the cases seen in the eye clinic at
the Town Hall:—
