During 1959 the number of new notifications of pulmonary
tuberculosis decreased to 26 compared with 31 last year and an
average of 39 in the last five years. The steady improvement in
the death rate from pulmonary tuberculosis is encouraging as is
the decreasing prevalence of and death rate from non-pulmonary
tuberculosis.
The Council is responsible for rehousing, one of the most
important measures in the prevention of this disease and also for
disinfection, but the County Council bears the responsibility for
all other preventive measures except the treatment of cases which
is that of the Regional Hospital Board.
