In 1953 there were 18,340 occupied houses, distributed as
follows:—

This suggests an average of 3.53 persons per occupied house
in 1953, or 3.25 if the institutional population is excluded. The
latter is comparable with 3.66 at the time of the 1931 Census, and
the former with an average of 4.3 per house in 1915.
