SECTION C.
SANITARY AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA.
AGRICULTURE (SAFETY, HEALTH AND WELFARE
PROVISIONS) ACT, 1956.
This Act places on local authorities the duty of securing the
provision and maintenance of sanitary accommodation for the use
of employees on agricultural holdings. The number of agricultural
holdings within the district, which come under the terms of this
Act, is limited.
Two visits have been paid in this connection and in one
instance the provision of a closet was required.
CESSPOOLS.
Three new cesspools have been installed during the year, all
for private dwellings where access to a sewer is not possible. Seven
cesspools have been abolished during the year.

There are now 400 premises not connected to main drainage.

In a number of cases two or more properties drain to one
cesspool. There are also several premises provided with small
sewage disposal plants and a few using chemical or earth closets.
The total number of cesspools in use in the district is now 316.
During the year, a short length of sewer was constructed at
Birchwood Corner, in the extreme eastern part of the district.
This discharges to an existing sewer in the Dartford Rural District.
Of the 29 houses previously without main drainage 19 had drained
to a single large cesspool. All have now been connected to the
sewer.
Consideration is to be given to the laying of sewers in private
streets off Leesons Hill, at a future date.
There are, in the district, a number of properties draining to
cesspools, although suitable sewers are available. No power at
present exists to require owners to carry out the necessary works of
connection.
