Certain requirements of the Food Hygiene Regulations 1955
overlap with the welfare provisions of the Shops Act, and it has
been possible to deal with both simultaneously.
Observations and a few complaints indicate that some shops
which open on Sundays and on the afternoon of the early closing
day, have been selling goods, not permitted under the Act. The
attention of possible offenders has been drawn to the matter and
it is being kept under observation.
No Closing Orders have been made in the district. The
General Closing days vary throughout the area and are as follow :—
Wednesday—St. Paul's Cray Estate (except Leith Hill), Chislehurst,
The Oval, Lamorbey, Lewis Road, Sidcup.
Thursday—Sidcup area, other than above.
A few shops open on the usual early closing day and remain
closed on Saturday afternoons.
Visits and observations total 556.

The following infringements of the Act have been dealt with.

ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION.
The Clean Air Act was carried through Parliament during the
year. Although not all of its provisions are immediately operative,
it is hoped that the Act will provide a firm basis for a serious
attempt to deal with atmospheric pollution.
So far as this district is concerned, the most important function
of the Act is that which enables smoke emission from domestic
property to be reduced or eliminated by the provision of fireplaces
designed to burn smokeless fuel, which is now becoming more
readily available. The Local Authority may select particular
parts of the district and, with Ministerial sanction, declare them
to be " Smoke Control Areas," in which, generally, it will be an
offence to produce smoke. In the early part of 1957 the Council
decided to confer with neighbouring authorities so that a concerted
plan could be discussed.
