POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of the total population of the
Urban District mid-year 1955, was 86,870, which is an increase of
1,040 over the figure for the previous year. This figure gives a
density of 9.7 persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population, measured by excess of births
over deaths, for 1955, was 623.
The steady increase in population in the postwar years continues
and it is interesting to note that as recently as 1946. the number
resident in the district was only 67,870. It is not anticipated that
the rate of increase during the past ten years will continue during
the next ten years and it is more likely that in the not too distant
future this figure will tend to become a fairly static one.
