POPULATION.
The Registrar General's estimate of total population (civilian
and non-civilian) of the Urban District, mid-year 1953. is 85.290
an increase of 160 over the year 1952.
This population gives a density of 9.5 persons to the acre.
The natural increase of population (measured by excess of
births over deaths) for the year was 559.
BIRTHS.
The Birth Rate for 1953 is 15.1 per 1.000 total population,
which is the same as that for the previous year, and compares
favourably with the rate of 15.5 for England and Wales.
1,291 live births were registered during the year, there being
641 males and 650 females.
The average yearly Birth Rate during the past ten years
was 17.3.
Illegitimate Births.
The illegitimate birth rate (per 1.000 live and still births) for
1953. is 40.2. There were 53 illegitimate births (23 males and
30 females).
Stillbirths.
The stillbirth rate for 1953. is 22.0 per 1.000 live and still
births, and 0.34 per 1.000 total population. There were 29 stillbirths
in the area (28 legitimate and 1 illegitimate).
DEATHS.
The Death Rate for the year 1953 is 8.6 per 1,000 total
population.
There were 732 deaths registered (after adjustment for inward
and outward transfers). Of this number. 382 were males and 350
females.
The rate for England and Wales is 11.4.
