INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
Statistical details of notifiable infectious diseases are shown
in Table VIII in the Appendix.
There were no epidemics of a serious nature during the year
1952. Two thousand two hundred and eighteen cases of infectious
diseases were notified.

Vaccination.

The County Medical Officer has furnished the following figures showing the number of persons who were vaccinated against smallpox during the year 1952.

Acute Anterior Poliomyelitis.
Ten cases were notified during the year. Seven of these were
Paralytic and three Nonparalytic. Eight were nursed in hospital.
Months during which the cases were notified :—
May—1, June—1, Aug.—2, Sept.—2, Oct.—1, Nov.—2, Dec—1
There was one death from this disease.
Scarlet Fever.
One hundred and fifty-two cases of Scarlet Fever were
notified during the year, giving an attack rate of 1.8 per 1,000
population. Ninety-four of these cases were home nursed, and
fifty-eight were removed to hospital.
There were three " return " cases.
There were no deaths from this disease recorded in the area.
Diphtheria.
No cases occurred in the Urban District during the year 1952.
