*The beds at "Fallowfield" are used exclusively for patients who
have been discharged from hospital as being no longer in need of hospital
nursing, but who are not sufficiently fit to return to their homes.
The nursing homes were visited regularly throughout the
year. No serious infringements of the Byelaws were found and
the service offered, in all cases, was up to the required standard.
Health Education.
In an effort to sustain and measure the interest in food
hygiene, a programme of four films was shown to food handlers
in November, at Alma Road School.
The show, which was attended by one hundred and thirtyseven
persons, was opened by the Chairman of the Council with
a few well chosen words, and, after the films, the Chairman of
the Public Health Committee gave a brief but able summing up
of the points brought out by the films.
Judged by the large attendance and the wrapt attention of
the audience, one felt that the information given by the films
did not fall upon stony ground and that at least some of the
many lessons to be learned about the correct handling of foodstuffs
must have been impressed upon the audience. If everybody
who attended the show only remembered one fact that was
new to them, the effort put into the organisation can be considered
well worth while and must bear fruit in the future.
In view of the attraction of films to modern audiences, it is
probably one of the best ways of educating food handlers in the
importance of their work from the public health point of view,
but it is probably wise not to overdo this form of propaganda
as opposed to the routine and more humdrum efforts at education
made throughout the year by word of mouth.
