The ten samples that did not satisfy the tests were not from
main supplies. Connections to the main water supply have since
been made.
There are three dwelling houses in the district which receive
their water supply from two private wells.
Rivers and Streams.
Sixty-eight inspections have been carried out by the
inspectors. The improvements to the Cray River were carried
out by the Kent River Board during the year.
Drainage and Sewerage.
The Urban District is represented on the West Kent Main
Sewerage Board which is the responsible Board in North West
Kent. During the year surface water sewers and soil sewers
were constructed on the Edgebury Estate, Royal Park Estate
and the L.C.C. Estate, St. Paul's Cray and certain major works
were required to replace defective glazed stone-ware pipes by
iron pipes.
Cesspools.
So far as we have been able to ascertain, there are 484
premises in the district not drained to sewers. Ten have
chemical closets and seven earth closets and the remainder have
cesspools. The Local Authority make no direct arrangements for
the emptying of cesspools. This task is undertaken by private
arrangement with a Maidstone firm. The charge is twenty-three
shillings for the first 4,000 gallons and twenty shillings for each
additional 1,000 gallons. The Local Authority have formulated
a scheme for main drainage at Leesons Hill when restrictions on
capital expenditure are lifted.
Swimming Baths.
The public are admitted to one small private swimming pool
in the district. Samples of the water are taken regularly and
remedial action taken where necessary.
