POPULATION.
In April, 1951, the National Census was taken and the
preliminary figures showed the population of the Urban District
of Chislehurst and Sidcup, on the night of the 8th April, 1951, to
be 83,837-a figure which indicated a 208.7% increase over the
census taken twenty years ago. This large increase was, in the
main, due to the overflow population of London being rehoused
at St. Paul's Cray and other London County Council housing
estates in the district. Details of the census are not yet available
and are awaited with interest because it is only from these details
that one can judge the need for and scope of the social services
in an area that is mainly residential. It is, for example,
important to know the age grouping of the population, the
proportion of child to adult population and the proportion of the
over sixties.
The 1951 return shows that the excess of births over deaths
was equivalent to 7.22 persons per 1,000 population.
