Population.—The population calculated to the middle of
1903 was 49,680, an increase of 5,115 in twelve months.
The number of inhabited houses was 8,240 and uninhabited 240
The following table shews the population and the number of the inhabited houses at the five preceding censuses.

In making my calculations I allow six persons to each occupied
house, and one for each unoccupied house.
The census of 1901 shewed the average to be 6., per house.
This method of calculating the population is the one adopted
by previous Medical Officers for the District.
Birth Rate.—During the year 1903 there were 1,422 births
registered. The birth rate per 1,000 persons living was 28,6. The
London birth rate was 28,5
