Infantile Mortality.—There were 182 deaths registered of Infants
under 1 year of age as against 1,080 births; the proportion which the
deaths under 1 year of age bear to 1,000 births is therefore 168.5, as
against i87.2 in the preceding year.
The following table compares the death-rate of children under one year per 1,000 registered births, and the birth-rate for the last fourteen years:—

Diarrhaa.—There were 48 deaths from Diarrhoea in children under
5 years, and 2 in persons over 5 years of age.
Acting on the instructions received from the Registrar General,
under the heading of " Diarrhoea," I have included deaths certified as
from Diarrhoea alone, or in combination with some other cause of
ill defined nature; and also deaths certified as from
Epidemic Enteritis,
Zymotic Enteritis,
Epidemic Diarrhoea, Summer Diarrhoea,
Dysentery and Dysenteric diarrhoea,
Choleraic Diarrhoea, Cholera, Cholera Nostras,
(in the absence of Asiatic Cholera),
