captured during the year. Of these, only three were ringed birds, and in accordance with
arrangements entered into with the Homing Union, who are naturally desirous that private
and perhaps valuable homing pigeons should not be destroyed, these were despatched to
the Secretary for return to the owner. The remaining birds were destroyed by dislocation
of the vertebrae, under the supervision of one of my officers.
The pigeons were captured principally in the neighbourhood of St. Paul's Cathedral,
Mansion House, Guildhall, Royal Exchange, Fishmongers' Hall, Carpenters' Hall, Leadenhall
Market, and Bishopsgate Churchyard.
In view of the fact that I have received numerous letters of protest against the action
taken, I would again emphasise the fact that it is not the intention of the City Corporation
to clear the City of these birds, the beauty of which is fully appreciated. It is, however,
essential that their numbers should be kept within reasonable limits.
EXHUMATION AND RE-INTERMENT OF BODIES.
City of London Cemetery.—During the year the bodies of seven persons buried at the
City of London Cemetery at Ilford have been exhumed and subsequently re-interred in the
same Cemetery. In accordance with the terms of the licences issued by the Home Secretary
in respect of these cases, the work of removal and re-interment was carried out in the early
morning under the supervision of your Medical Officer of Health.
HUMAN REMAINS.
33, Cock Lane.
During excavation work at No. 33, Cock Lane, a small quantity of human remains
was discovered. These bones were very old, and probably of Roman origin, and, with the
approval of the Home Office, they were transferred to the Royal College of Surgeons for
purposes of examination.
