CREMATION.
The number of cremations which have taken place in Great Britain during 1931 is
5,195, the largest in any one year since this method of disposal was first permitted by law
in 1885, and an increase over the 1930 figures of more than 14 per cent. The number still,
however, only represents approximately 1 per cent, of the total deaths, and this country
is far behind the percentage of some of the Continental countries.
A comparison of figures given in the following table indicates steady but slow progress.
Public opinion is undoubtedly undergoing enlightenment in this matter, and in response
to an increasing demand for facilities, burial authorities and others concerned are studying
the development of cremation and considering the provision of crematoria before existing
burial accommodation becomes difficult of provision.
When established, these crematoria should result in an accelerated rate of increase
in the number of cremations.
An attempt to replace deep-set sentiment and reasonable prejudice has been made at
the Corporation Cemetery at Ilford, by the establishment of a Garden of Remembrance.
