Inspection
of slaughter
houses.
During the year the following authorised offensive businesses, other than that of a slaughterer
of cattle, were discontinued: the business of a knacker in Southwark ; the business of a tallow-melter
and soap-boiler in Lambeth ; the business of a fat-melter and a tripe-boiler in Poplar. Hence the
number of scheduled offensive businesses declined from 79 to 74.
The number of such authorised offensive businesses, except those in the markets under the
jurisdiction of the City Corporation, was at the end of the year as follows :—
.bat melters 15
Tripe boilers 21
Glue and size manufacturers 5
Knackers 4
Fellmongers 6
Bone boilers 2
Manure manufacturers 2
Soap boilers 11
Tallow melters 5
Gut manufacturers 3
74
In several instances more than one offensive business is carried on at the same premises, hence
the number of premises used for the purpose of these businesses is smaller than the number of such
businesses.

The boroughs in which these premises are situated, the number of premises, and for most boroughs, the number of inspections, are shown in the following table :—
