The decline in the birth-rate which has been manifest since the decennium 1871-80, has not
been equally conspicuous in all parts of London. Indeed, during the decennium 1891-1900, the birthrate
has been greater in the registration districts of Whitechapel and St. George-in-the-East than in
1871-80, a result probably indirectly due to alien immigration. In all other registration districts the
birth-rate has declined, as will be seen from the following table:—

It is interesting to note that the decline in the birth-rate is manifest in many of the principal
European towns, as will be seen from the following table, in which the birth-rate of the first year shown
in the table is taken as 100, and that of subsequent years stated in proportion. The behaviour of the
birth-rate in Dublin appears to be exceptional so far as the towns selected are concerned:—
