Sanitary Officers.
Appended to this report (see Appendix IV.) will be found a return showing the number of
sanitary inspectors employed in the various boroughs in the years 1903 and 1904, the figures
relating to the year 1901 being based upon information received from the medical officers of health
in the early part of that year. The return shows that whereas there were 301 sanitary inspectors
employed in London in 1903, this number had increased in 1904 to 313, included in this number
being 28 women. The increase in the total number of inspectors was indeed, in the main, due to
the appointment of female inspectors who are largely engaged in the inspection of workshops
employing female labour. The return gives particulars as to the duties performed by the
inspectors in the several districts, as well as information as to the population inhabiting tenements
of less than five rooms.

Medical Officer of Health.
