Whooping-cough.
The deaths from whooping cough in the Administrative County of London in 1899
numbered 1,728, compared with 2,160 in 1898.
The death rates from this disease in 1899 and preceding periods were as follows—

The death rate in each year in relation to the mean death rate of the period 1841-99 is
shown in diagram XII.
It will be seen from the following table that the London death rate from whooping cough
exceeded the death rates of all the undermentioned towns except Manchester, Liverpool,
Birmingham and Salford in 1889-98, and in 1899 exceeded the rates of all except Manchester,
Liverpool, Leeds, Hull and Salford.

* In the preparation of this table, the question whether the persors, who were attacked and who died, belonged to London is
disregarded, the percentage being calculated on the number of cases notified in London, and the number of deaths cccurring in London
and the institutions belonging to London. Inasmuch as the age of the patient is not in all eases recorded in the notification certificate
it has been necessary to distribute such cases among the various ages proportionately.
