If the London death rate be compared with the death rates of other large towns in England
having more than 200,000 inhabitants, it will be seen that in the period 1887-96 the London death
rate exceeded that of any of these towns except Manchester, Liverpool, West Ham and Salford, while
in 1897 the London death rate was lower than that of any except Leeds, Bristol, Nottingham, Bradford
and Hull.

The following table shows that the measles death rate in London was higher than that of any of the undermentioned foreign cities in the period 1887-96, except St. Petersburg, and in 1897 was higher than that of any except St. Petersburg and Vienna—

In the distribution of measles mortality in London during the year as a whole, the eastern
group of districts had the highest death rate, the western the lowest. Of the districts St. George-inthe-East
suffered the most, Paddington the least. During the first and second quarters of the year
the measles mortality was above the average of London in the eastern and central groups of districts ;
in the third quarter of the year the mortality of all the groups of districts except the northern and
western exceeded the average of London; in the fourth quarter the average measles mortality had
risen considerably, and that of the eastern and southern groups of districts exceeded the average of
London.
The death rates in each sanitary district of London in the period 1887-96 and in 1897 are shown in the following table—
