London had therefore, in the period 1887-96, a lower infant mortality than any of these towns
except West Ham and Bristol, and in 1897 a lower infant mortality than any except Bristol.

The eastern group of districts had the highest infant mortality (170), the northern the lowest
(145), the infant mortality of the southern, western, and central groups being 158, 160, and 163
respectively. Of the districts, St. George-in-the-East had the highest (197,), and Plumstead the
lowest infant mortality (116).
