Births. The number of births registered in the Administrative County of London in 1896 was 136,223 giving an annual birth rate of 30.2 per 1,000 persons living. The birth rate since 1870 has been as follows—

The accompanying diagram (II.) shows the London birth rate in each year in relation to the
mean of the period 1851-96.
The birth rate in each of the London sanitary districts in 1896 is shown in the following table—
During the year the eastern group of districts had the highest birth rate (37.0), the
western the lowest (24.8), the southern, central and northern groups having birth rates intermediate
between these two groups (31.2, 314 and 28 5 respectively). The district having the highest birth
rate was St. Luke (46*7) and the district having the lowest was St. Martin.in.the.Fields (16.2).
