In addition, 190 unoccupied houses and flats were found during the survey of Wards, 1, 4, 6, 7 and 8. These also have been excluded from the survey. The table below sets out the numbers in each of the wards: -

Finally, it was considered desirable to include certain streets in the survey
of Ward 1, which were omitted from the original survey carried out in 1935/37.
The inclusion of these streets accounts for the apparent increase of housing
accommodation shown in Appendix Table 'A' .
Definition of Overcrowding - Overcrowding occurs when the number of persons
sleeping in the dwelling either:-
(i) is such that any two persons of opposite sex, other than husband and
wife, being over 10 years old must sleep in the same room, or
(ii) is in excess of the permitted number of persons as defined in the Sixth
Schedule of the Act, (Housing Act, 1957, section 77(1)), as follows:-
