ERYSIPELAS.
121 cases were notified and 9 deaths occurred, as compared with 117 cases and 17
deaths during the previous year.
CEREBRO-SPINAL MENINGITIS.
(Cerebro-Spinal Fever, Meningococcal Meningitis, "Spotted Fever.")
Nine cases were notified and three others were brought to notice after death. Of
the nine notified cases, only four have recovered completely and the diagnosis was doubtful
throughout the course of one of them. Five of the notified cases died; the diagnosis was
confirmed for three of these, one was proved at the post mortem to have died from Tetanus
and the notification was withdrawn by the medical practitioner concerned, and the other from
Encephalitis Lethargica. There were therefore nine definite cases and one indefinite case and
six deaths during the year.
The case mortality is very high. The disease has a sudden onset and fatal cases usually
die in the early stages. A survey of the mode of treatment is being made, the effect of different
brands of serum is being carefully recorded, and these reports are sent to the Ministry of Health.
It is hoped that the collection of these data from the whole country will supply the necessary
information on the value of Serum Treatment.
ACUTE POLIOMYELITIS AND POLIOENCEPHALITIS.
Seven cases were notified, two of which died. Of the remaining five, one is under
treatment at the Treloar Hospital, Alton; two are at Queen Mary's Hospital, Carshalton, and
two are attending Hospitals in London. All these cases occurred in July, August and September.
