Maternity and Child Welfare Centres.
These are 8 in number. Each Centre is managed by a Committee, the members of
which not only give valuable help at the various consultations, but in most cases also
provide additional funds for the maintenance of many other useful activities associated with
the work of each Centre. The Council has representatives 011 each Committee, and each
Committee sends one representative to the Council's Maternity and Child Welfare SubCommittee.
The Centre at the Royal Free Hospital is not subsidised by the Council.
The Table on page 32 gives statistics concerning the work of all the Centres during
the year. It will be seen that 473 ante-natal consultations were held, the number of expectant
mothers was 1,330 and their total attendances were 5,880.
For the two previous years the total attendances were 6,367 and 6,388.
The number of consultations for children was 1,426, the children who attended for the
first time numbered 2,302, and the total attendances were 43,839.
For the two previous years the total attendances of children were 45,123 and 47,557.
Particulars concerning some of the special activities of the individual Centres are given
in the following paragraphs:—
St. Pancras School for Mothers, 1, Ampthill Square.
In addition to the consultations provided by the Council, interviews with parents
(apart from those otherwise recorded) numbered 2,090. Other activities of this centre
include the following:—
Classes for Mothers.
At infant care classes there were 405 attendances; and at needlework, etc., classes,
735 attendances.
Dinners for Mothers and Children.
These are supplied at a very small charge for necessitous cases. 2,953 dinners were
supplied to nursing and expectant mothers, and 2,340 to young children.
Observation Day Nursery.
This is for children attending the Centre who need special care. There were 1,801
attendances during the year, of which 502 were made by infants under one year of age, and
1,299 by children from 1 to 5 years of age.
Dental Clinic.
This is provided out of funds from voluntary sources. The Dental Surgeon is
Mr. George Thomson, l.d.s. During the year 41 consultations were held, at which 226
treatments were provided for mothers and 166 for children.
