ERYSIPELAS.
117 cases were notified and 17 deaths occurred, as compared with 96 cases and 8
deaths during the previous year.
CEREBRO-SPINAL MENINGITIS.
(Cerebro-Spinal Fever, Meningococcal Meningitis, "Spotted Fevf.r.")
Thirteen cases were notified during the year, and one other was brought to notice only
after death. On further investigation one of these cases was considered to be doubtful
and the diagnosis was not verified, three others were found to have been incorrectly diagnosed
(one of whom recovered after " Acute Meningitis of unknown origin," one died from
"Diarrhoea and Enteritis" and one from "Pneumococcal Meningitis"). There were
therefore 10 definite cases and one indefinite case in the Borough and six of the definite cases
died. Supervision has been maintained on the five cases which did not end fatally. Two of
these have removed to unknown addresses, but were reported to have completely recovered
their normal health before moving. The other three have recovered completely.

It will be noted that the Case Mortality is over 50 per cent., a very high figure. The
disease has a rapid onset and the fatal cases generally die in the early stages. A survey of the
treatment is being made and the effect of different brands of serum is being carefully recorded.
These reports are sent to the Ministry of Health, and it is hoped that the collection of this data
from the whole country will supply the necessary information on the value of Serum Treatment.
