PUERPERAL PYREXIA.
This condition was made notifiable by Regulations which came into force on
October 1st, 1926. From that date until the end of the year thirteen cases were notified.
Special inquiries were made concerning these cases in order to ascertain the cause of the
Pyrexia. In two instances this was attributed to Mastitis, in one to Erysipelas, and in one to
Pneumonia. The remaining nine cases were found to be suffering from conditions which
should have caused them to have been notified as cases of Puerperal Fever and not as
Puerperal Pyrexia. These nine cases have therefore been included in the list of Puerperal
Fever cases.
ERYSIPELAS.
80 cases were notified and 8 deaths occurred, as compared with 117 cases and 12
deaths during the previous year.
ANTHRAX.
One case was notified, but on further investigation it was found to have been incorrectly
diagnosed.
CEREBRO-SPINAL MENINGITIS.
(Cerebro-Spinal Fever.)
Three cases were notified, but one of these was subsequently found to have been
incorrectly diagnosed. Of the two genuine cases one proved fatal.
ANTERIOR POLIOMYELITIS AND POLIOENCEPHALITIS.
Two cases were notified. One was admitted to the special hospital provided for cases
of this disease, the other received treatment at a voluntary hospital in the Borough. Three
deaths were registered as having been due to this disease, the existence of these three cases
was only disclosed on death, as none of them had been notified previously.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM.
Forty-three cases were notified, but three of these were subsequently found not to be
St. Pancras cases; there were therefore 40 cases belonging to the Borough. This equals an
incidence rate of 11.0 per 1000 births. The services of a visiting nurse were provided in 9
instances. Seven cases were admitted to the special hospital provided by the Metropolitan
Asylums Board for the treatment of cases of this disease.

The following table gives details concerning the cases in the form desired by the Ministry of Health:—
