the occupier must be registered as a purveyor of milk, and will then be kept under
observation. Action can be taken if the bottles are opened on such premises, as
this is now a punishable offence.
As an additional safeguard, I would suggest that when registering a purveyor of
milk as above, the sanction of the application be definitely endorsed " for the sale of
milk in unopened bottles only."

Dairies and Milkshops.—Twenty-three applications for registration under the Dairies,
Cowsheds and Milkshops Orders were received during the year. Of this number, 21 were
granted and 2 refused.
One application in respect of an itinerant vendor was also received and granted.
The following list gives particulars as to the purveyors of milk on the register at the
end of 1926:—
Number of purveyors of milk from retail milkshops on the register at the

Deduct number removed from the register during the year 1926 -22
Add number of purveyors registered by resolution of the Council
during 1926 +21
Total number of purveyors of milk from retail milkshops on register at
the end of 1926 212
In addition to the above, there were also on the register at the end of 1926 one person
in respect of premises where a wholesale milk trade only is done, and 12 itinerant vendors
without retail milkshops. The one cowshed in the Borough also has a retail milkshop
attached to it, and is included in the total of 212.
Milk (Special Designations) Order, 1923.
The special designations under which milk may be sold comprise the following:—
"Certified," "Grade A (tuberculin tested)," "Grade A," and "Pasteurised."
The Order states the conditions which must be complied with before a licence can be
granted in connection with the production, distribution and sale of such milk. Any such licence
is valid for not more than one year and expires on December 31st in each year.
