3.—Home Work.
In certain industries specified in the Act, if work is given out by Employers or
Contractors to be done by workers at home, lists containing the names and addresses of such
workers must be forwarded to the Local Authority. The object of this is to prevent work
being done in premises which are insanitary, or in which infectious disease is present.
The following lists were received during the year:—16 in respect of the making, etc.,
of wearing apparel, comprising the names of 63 outworkers (contractors) and 67 outworkers
(workmen), 1 in respect of upholstering, containing the names of 3 outworkers (workmen),
1 in respect of the making of cardboard boxes, comprising the names of 12 outworkers
(workmen) and 1 in respect of the making or filling of Christmas crackers, etc., comprising the
names of 12 outworkers (workmen).
The following table gives the number and type of outworkers' premises in the Borough and the principal industries concerned :—
