Arrangements have been made by the Council for the provision of the abovementioned
facilities for any necessitous case, resident in the Borough.
7. Widows', Orphans' and Old Age Contributory Pensions Act:—
This came into force on January 1, 1926. The duties of the Local Authority are
chiefly those specified in Section 6(2). The Local Authority for the County
of London is the County Council, but Section 41(2) gives power to delegate
the duties to the Borough Council, and this power was exercised.
C.—The undermentioned Public Health legislation was enacted during 1926, but
does not come into force until the following year;—
1. Lead Paint (Protection against Poisoning) Act, 1926.
2. Births and Deaths Registration Act, 1926.
3. Public Health (Smoke Abatement) Act, 1926.
4. Coroners (Amendment) Act, 1926.
5. Public Health (Preservatives, etc., in Food) Amendment Regulations,
1926.
Section III.—SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA,
WATER SUPPLY.
This is provided and controlled by the Metropolitan Water Board. Several industrial
undertakings in the Borough have provided a private supply of good quality by means of deep
wells. The Borough Council also obtains by means of a deep well a considerable supply for
use at the Public Baths, Prince of Wales Road.
Under Section 49 of the Public Health (London) Act, 8 notices were received and the
necessary action was taken with reference to premises in which the water supply had been
cut off.
In connection with new houses, 58 certificates were issued under Section 48(2) of the
Public Health (London) Act, to the effect that a proper and sufficient supply of water for
sanitary and domestic purposes had been provided.
An additional supply of water was furnished to the upper floors of 170 tenement
houses under powers contained in Section 78 of the London County Council (General Powers)
Act, 1907.

DRAINAGE. The sanitary inspectors have the duty of supervising all work upon drains, including construction, reconstruction and repairs. During the year the following work has been carried out:—
