The majority of these institutions are situated in the south of the Borough, and in this area a
very large proportion of the cases accept this treatment as out-patients. In the north of
the Borough the out-patient hospital service is not so available, the result being that
the majority of the cases are attended by medical practitioners or midwives.
Health Week.
This was observed during the period October 3rd to 9th. The object of Health Week
is to focus public attention upon matters appertaining to health, and to arouse a sense of
personal responsibility in connection with its attainment and maintenance.
The following methods were adopted in an endeavour to achieve this purpose : —
1. A series of articles on Health subjects were written and published in the
form of a booklet containing about fifty pages. In order to reduce the rather
heavy expenditure a number of approved advertisements were included.
Fifty thousand copies of the booklet were distributed. The receipts from the
advertisements more than covered the cost of production.
2. A letter was sent to the Clergy and Ministers of all denominations, requesting
them to co-operate in the movement, and to draw attention to the subject on
Health Week Sunday, October 3rd.
3. A Special Open Meeting of the Tuberculosis Care Committee was held on
Monday, October 4th, the Chair being taken by His Worship the Mayor.
There was a good attendance, including representatives of many official and
voluntary social activities in the Borough.
4. On Tuesday, October 5th, all the medical practitioners in the Borough were
invited to a Special Meeting, at which the Mayor again presided.
In addition to discussing subjects of mutual interest to Public Health
Authorities and general practitioners, an address on The "Schick Test" and
" Diphtheria Immunisation" was given by Dr. R. A. O'Brien, c.b.e., m.d.
5. On Wednesday, October fith, a meeting arranged by the Social Hygiene
Council was held at the Aldenham Street Schools. An interesting address
was given, followed by an appropriate film.
6. On Thursday, October 7th, the Public Health Department of the London
County Council invited the Medical Officers of all the Metropolitan Boroughs
to the Bedford Music Hall, Camden Town. A film was shown illustrating
the "Schick" Test and Diphtheria Prevention. This film is, at present, the
only one in the Country dealing with this subject. It will be ready for
exhibition to the public at an early date.
7. On Friday, October 8th, the boys and girls in the senior classes of all the
public elementary schools in the Borough were invited to write essays on
subjects selected by the Medical Officer of Health from the Health Week
Booklet. This competition was arranged in order to stimulate interest and
ensure publicity in connection with subjects discussed in the booklet. The
essays were judged and prizes awarded to the successful competitors. The
London County Council Education Department gave their consent and
support, and the teachers their cordial co-operation and assistance. This
particular procedure was very successful, aud should prove to be of great
value, as many thousands of essays were written.
