Infantile Mortality.
274 deaths of infants under 1 year of age occurred in the Borough during the year.
This is equal to a rate of 76 per thousand births, and is somewhat higher than that of the
previous year. This increase was almost entirely due to the prevalence of measles, and to a
lesser degree of whooping cough, together with the complications arising from these diseases.
The deaths from diarrhoea and enteritis were about the average, and there was practically no
change in those due to premature birth, debility and congenital defects as compared with the
previous year.
In Table 1, on page 78, the corresponding rates for previous years are given, and in
Table 4, on page 84, the figures will be found for the different wards and registration subdistricts.
Table 5, on page 85, gives the infant mortality rates for England and Wales,
the County of London, the Metropolitan Boroughs, and certain of the large towns with
populations exceeding 125,000.
In the tables on the next two pages are shown: —
1. The causes of death of all children under 12 months of age during 1026,
classified according to age at death.
2. The causes of death of children under 12 months of age during the ten
previous years. In this table the number of births in each year is also given
for reference.
