Section IV.— SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DISTRICT.
SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE BOROUGH.
Inspections.— Altogether 69,668 inspections were made in 1921 by the staff of Inspectors
and Visitors. These consisted of 36,632 initial inspections and 33,036 re-inspections.
Of these inspections, 40,526 were made by the District Sanitary Inspectors, 6,423 by
the Sanitary Inspectors for Food and Food places, 3,430 by the Sanitary Inspector for Factories
and Workshops, and 19,289 by the Women Sanitary Inspectors and Health Visitors.
The inspections made by each individual Inspector and Visitor are shown in table 10,
on page 99.
The work of the various classes of Inspectors and Visitors is set out in tables 7, 8 and
9, on pages 95 to 98.
The inspections dealt with above are exclusive of the visits made by the Council's staff
at the Maternity and Child Welfare Centres (see page 19), and by the staff of the Tuberculosis
Dispensaries (see page 45); nor do they include the work of the disinfecting staff (see page 37).

Notices served and result of service.— 4,409 intimation notices (comprising 9,564 items) were served by the Sanitary Inspectors during 1921. These were made up as follows—

1,953 Statutory notices (comprising 3,027 items) were served during 1921 and the early
part of 1922, following non-compliance with these intimation notices. These are also classified
in tables 11, 12, 13 and 14, on pages 100 to 102.
