PUERPERAL FEVER.
18 patients were notified as suffering from puerperal fever during the year.
Of these 3 were afterwards found not to be suffering from this disease.
The corrected number of notified cases was therefore 15, equal to an
incidence rate of 2.9 per 1,000 births.
Seven deaths from this disease were registered during the year, giving a
case mortality of 46.7 per cent.
12 cases followed the birth of live-born infants.
2 cases followed the birth of dead viable infants.
1 case followed an abortion.
7 of the patients were pri miparse (i.e., women who had not previously borne
children).
8 of the patients were multipara).
In 4 cases " instruments" were used at the confinement.
Inquiries were made in each case as to the existence in the home of scarlet
fever, erysipelas, or other infectious disease, or of septic conditions, with
negative results, except that in one case a member of the family (the husband)
was stated to be suffering from " blood poisoning in the leg."
Symptoms developed on 1st day after delivery in 2 cases.
