There is no doubt that during the past 10 years the subject of infant
welfare has received more attention in St. Pancras (both from this department
and from voluntary agencies) than any other phase of public health; and it
is encouraging to find that the special campaign has been accompanied
by this marked change in the infantile mortality rate. There remains still
much work to be done, as the present infant mortality rate is not less than
double that which would prevail under ideal conditions.
The actual work that is being done in regard to this subject is described
elsewhere in this report (pages 34-43).

The infantile mortality occurring during the whole year per 1,000 births is classified in the following table according to the quarter of the year in which the deaths took place, and the corresponding figures are given for each of the past 9 years :—
