* This estimate is made by calculating the annual rate of increase in population of each subdistrict
from 1851 to 1861, and taking three quarters of that as the rate for the nine months from
the middle of 1860 to the census in 1861, and deducting that percentage from the population of
ea«h place as ascertained in the late census.
f In this column deaths in the Strand Union are excluded as not properly belonging to St.
Pancras.
X In this column the deaths which occurred in St. Pancras Workhouse, the University College,
and Royal Free Hospitals, instead of being left in the sub-districts in which those institutions are
situated, have been distributed amongst the several sub-districts in what is believed to be nearly
their due proportion, allotting those whose previous residences have been ascertained, and
calculating for the remainder in the proportion of the population of the several sub-districts.
§ Allowance has been made for the number of inmates of the Workhouse in making the calculation
for Camden Town,
f In this estimate the births in the workhouse, 208, have been deducted.
