Health Education
This subject was dealt with fully in my Annual Report for 1965
and it is only necessary to report that during 1966 we continued
our efforts in close liaison with the teaching and other staff
employed by the Inner London Education Authority. As stated
elsewhere in this Report, a number of sessions were held in schools
at the request of head teachers to deal with subjects such as mothercraft,
including a school for deaf girls. Consideration has been
given to the question of appointing a Health Educator to organize
and co-ordinate the work of health education but no appointment
had been made by the end of the year. In the meanwhile, we have
had the advantage of the services of the Health Educator employed
by the Inner London Education Authority who visited Wandsworth
schools during the year to talk on health subjects such as
smoking and lung cancer.
Sanitary conditions in schools
Medical officers carry out detailed inspections of school premises
annually and advise about the sanitary conditions and standards
of hygiene. Reports concerning defects, with appropriate recommendations
are brought to the notice of the Education Officer. The
reports indicate that improvements are mainly needed in the older
types of school.
Medical staff meetings
Current problems relating to the school health service were
discussed from time to time at meetings with the senior medical
officers and the school physicians. The subjects, which covered a
wide field, ranged from immunization and epidemiology to management
of school clinics and procedure relating to inspections.
