VITAL STATISTICS.
Population.
The resident population at the middle of the year was
estimated by the Registrar-General to be 271,340. This is a
reduction of 68,760 on the population estimated for 1938, the
fall being due to enlistment in H.M. Forces and evacuation as
a result of the war.
Table I. shows the population of each sub-district, based on the above estimation, compared with the Census population.
