18 Report of the Medical Officer of Health for 1938.
The number of deaths which occurred in Institutions, etc.,
inside the Borough was 1,345 but 1,104 of these persons did not
belong to the Borough.
A total of 2,305 persons belonging to the Borough died in
Institutions, 241 occurring in Institutions within the Borough
and 2,064 in Institutions outside the Borough.
Infantile Mortality.
The number of deaths under one year was 189—35 in
Clapham, 12 in Putney, 35 in Balham, 41 in Streatham, 22 in
Tooting, and 44 in Wandsworth. As the number of births was
4,056, the Infantile Mortality rate was 46 per 1,000 births. This
compares with a rate of 62 in the previous year and is the lowest
rate ever recorded.
The rate is lower than for the whole of London, which was
57 per 1,000 births.
For the 10 years ending 1918 the average infantile mortality
rate was 87, while for the 10 years ending 1937, the average rate
was 56.
The number of deaths among legitimate infants was 174
to 3,827 births—a mortality of 45 per 1,000 births, while the
number of deaths among illegitimate infants was 15 to 229 births
—a mortality of 65 per 1,000 births.
Table VI. gives the comparative figures of infantile
mortality for the last 10 years for the whole of the Borough and
for each of the six sub-districts.
