In addition to the above, 29 cases of suspected Pulmonary
Tuberculosis were notified by the Medical Officer to the Education
Department of the London County Council.
These cases had been discovered in the examination of children
at school.
Of these 29, nine were in attendance at Brompton or other
Hospitals, eight were stated to have recovered, six were still ill,
and six had removed.
'/ ,
The whole of the work in connection with these cases has
been carried out by the female Sanitary Inspectors, and I am able
to report that it was done in a most thorough and satisfactory
manner.
The total number of visits paid was 938, 180 in Clapham,
54 in Putney, 178 in Streatham, 148 in Tooting, and 378 in Wandsworth.
As in previous years, the pamphlet which has been in use
since 1903 was left, and the instructions thereon were in most of
the cases carried out.
As there are no Public Institutions in the Borough to which
consumptive patients can be sent, the Inspectors have referred
children to the Invalid Children's Association, and in the majority
of cases they have been able to obtain convalescent treatment
for them. Where great poverty existed in the house the Invalid
Children's Aid Association was unable to give prolonged assistance,
and in those instances the matter had to be referred to the Guardians.
Certain adult cases were referred to the Charity Organisation
Society, which has helped in giving Hospital Letters and convalescent
treatment.
