102. The Council bore the expense of the materials and of the
skilled labour, the Central Body defraying the cost of the unskilled
labour.
103. The extension of the sewer in Rectory Lane, and the
construction of additional gullies there, formed part of the Rectory
Lane scheme, but the Central Body declined to undertake this
work, which was executed by the Council at its own expense, the
estimated cost being £360. This is not included in the statement
above.
104. The Borough Council also submitted to the Central Body
a scheme for the excavation of the bed of the Bell Lane Creek,
the construction of a concrete embankment wall at the Council's
wharf there, and the alteration of the levels of the wharf in connection
therewith. The estimated cost of the work was as follows,
viz.: unskilled labour, £1,447 i6s. 8d.; skilled labour,
£.312 17s. 6d. ; materials, £775 14s.; contingencies, £128 11s.
10d.; total, ,£2,665. The Borough Council offered to provide the
necessary materials for the work, and to pay the cost of the skilled
labour, but the Local Government Board did not see their way to
make a grant to the Central Body to cover the cost of the unskilled
labour, and the further consideration of the matter was
adjourned.
105. The Borough Council suggested to the London County
